LAU HANCOTTE

Lau Hancotte (2001, Brussels) is a visual artist based between The Hague and Brussels. Working primarily with still images, her practice revolves around exploring human experiences through a blend of absurdity and humour. Her recent projects question the rituals and conventions that shape everyday life, such as how we use utensils, how we dress, and how we grieve.

Her approach is characterised by straightforward visuals that make her work
accessible to a wide audience, often paired with interactive installations. By combining photography with tactile experiences, she invites the viewer into a deeper engagement with the subject matter.

Research plays a crucial role in her creative process. She delves into the history and culture surrounding her themes, allowing her to unearth and highlight the inherent absurdity of these customs.
She believes that direct and playful confrontation is the most effective way to communicate her message, drawing viewers into a reflection on the societal rules that govern us.
